Minorca bewitches with the beauty of its landscape, peace and lovely beaches hidden in the inlets sheltered by cliffs. The charming streets with whitewashed walls of houses, sleepy villages, small fishing ports and mysterious megaliths are the postcards of Minorca, which has stolen the heart of many holidaymakers.
Minorca is the second largest island in the Balearic archipelago. This small island has a width of only 16 km and length of 50 km. In summer the sun shines here up to 12 hours, and the location in the mild Mediterranean climate ensures a rainless and hot summer. Unlike the neighbouring islands, Majorca and the entertaining Ibiza, time has stopped here. Landscapes untouched by modernity, numerous traces of bygone eras left by the Roman, Mauritania and Arabic cultures are the characteristics of the island of Minorca. The few villages and small fishing ports, scattered around the coast, right next to fabulous coves captivating with the blueness of the sea, are typical views for the island. The naturalness of the landscape has been maintained thanks to the patronage of UNESCO. In 1993, Minorca was declared a biosphere reserve. The current capital of the island Mahón, also known as Maó, was under British rule from the 18th century, who made a large impact on the architecture of the city. The fortifications built by the English, which were to defend one of the deepest and largest natural harbours in the world, is currently a very popular tourist attraction. In Talatí de Dalt, which is just several kilometers from the capital city, there are remains of a Talaiot settlement, one of many on the island. In the western part of Minorca there are remains of the prehistoric settlement Son Catlar, which came about probably in the bronze age, and its growth came shortly before Roman rule. A real treasure for archaeologists and antiquity hotheads is Naveta des Tudons - probably the oldest tomb in Europe. It is a megalith, which dates back to more than 3 thousand years ago!
We can encounter perfectly preserved landmarks of Minorcan culture also in the former capital of the island - Ciutadella. It was a major centre during Arabic reign, now this historic town is gladly visited by tourists vacationing on the island of Minorca. Minorca has a lot to offer, particularly for those looking for relaxing holidays with the family. Arenal d'en Castell, located on the north of the island, has one of the most beautiful beaches on this part of the coast. Water lovers will find a wide range of watersports here like diving. The attractiveness of the village consists not only of a sandy beach with a light sand, but also well developed tourist infrastructure. In the centre you will find clubs and pubs, and you can get a delicious meal in one of the local restaurants. Due to the island location the local cuisine prevails in seafood and a variety of fish. A speciality is caldereta de llagosta, that is lobster stew, found very often on local tables. On the island you can also find British influences, due to the gin Xoriguer produced here since the 18th century, which is a testament to the rich history of Minorca.
