The sun and lava, white houses like sugar cubes, blue domes of churches, the intensely emerald Aegean Sea with the famous volcano Caldera and phenomenal sunsets with a unique colour palette create the fantastic landscapes of Santorini, which you can fall in love with at first sight.
The most famous island of the Cyclades fascinates by its mysterious past. Considered to be the mythical Atlantis, it was a flourishing centre of Minoan culture, when a powerful volcanic eruption in about 1600 BC forever changed its face. The inner part exploded into the air, the empty space was filled by the sea and that is how the famous Caldera was created, considered to be the largest in the world. Throughout history the rulers and names of the island have changed. First Strongile - Round, then Kalliste - the most beautiful, and Thera - in honour of the son of a Theban hero. The most popular name - Santorini, comes from the Byzantine era and is connected with the name of the patron saint of the island, St Irene. Santorini has an area of 76 km2, it is 18 km long, 2-6 km wide and consists of Thera, the main island in the shape of a horseshoe, the smaller: Therasia and Aspronisi, and 2 islets in the Caldera: Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni with the crater of the volcano. The wonderful climate guarantees a clear, sunny summer and a mild winter. The fertile volcanic soil provides the products for the delicious local cuisine. The Santorini small tomatoes are famous for its taste value, which are used to make tomatokeftedes - fried pancakes made from pureed tomatoes with herbs, broad beans as small as peas and unique white aubergines. The local wines are appreciated, the most popular is the strong, sweet vinsanto, made of sun-dried grapes. On the entire island there are hundreds of places, some more and others less elegant, where you can enjoy the delicious dishes in a unique setting.
The capital of the island is Fira, attached to a cliff, colourful, popular with tourists, with many shops and elegant boutiques. The pastel "skafta" houses facing the sea, built from local materials, often go deep into the rocks and are much larger than they appear from the outside. Oia is equally scenic, in the north of the island, smaller and just as crowded, better known as the perfect place to enjoy the famous sunsets. The beautiful Imerovigli is another village with views of the Caldera, built on the edge of a precipice, on a cliff even higher than Fira. Once it was a key guarding point, where pirate boats were sought out, today there are a few good hotels and a couple of taverns here. A favorite destination for beachgoers is Kamari, with a large selection of hotels, seaside boardwalk and plenty of restaurants, bars, discos and shops. The well-developed, dark, volcanic beach is more than 2 km long and you can enjoy many watersports. It is worth visiting the Byzantine church Panagia Episkopi and one of the nearby wineries that produces vinsanto and delicious, dry white wines. Another popular beach in Santorinin is Perissa. It is separated from Kamari by a rocky cliff that rises from the sea 350 m high - Meso Vouno, where there are ruins of the ancient Thira. Perissa is a typical holiday destination with the longest on the island black volcanic beach, with bars and taverns. An extension of Perissa is the less crowded beach of Perivolos. In all the corners of the island, immortalized on photographs an infinite number of times, tourists, who spend only a few intense hours in Santorini, envy those who are relaxing by the hotel pools, and promise themselves that they will return here for longer.
