According to mythology, it owes the fact of being an island to the conflict of gods. It allegedly broke away from the Thessaly under the stroke of Poseidon's tridentine, when he was fighting with Zeus. It is separated from the land by a strait, which is only 40 meters wide at its narrowest point! Evia resorts are visited by the Greeks from Thessaly and Athens, who know where to look for a holiday relaxation away from the crowded resorts, yet close to home. They are followed by an increasing number of ksenoi – foreigners.

Eubea (Greek name of Evia), the second largest Greek island, has 3 654 km² and is 180 km long. The coastline is 680 km long and is very diversified, with rocky coastlines, sandy beaches and cliffs, which make up the picturesque Eubea’s landscape. The eastern coast is more wild and inaccessible, while the western coast is more developed. Over 80% of Evia's surface area is mountainous, with the highest peak being Dirfis - 1743 m above sea level. The road network, although systematically modernised, is rather poor. The island's landscapes also include olive and fig groves, aubergine and wheat fields, sheep pastures. There are ancient ruins, medieval castles, Byzantine churches and traditional villages.

The location of the island influenced its history. Since antiquity, various rulers have usurped their rights to it. In the early Middle Ages, it was ruled by the Byzantium and then by the Venetians, who called it Negroponte. It was under Turkish rule for about 400 years and it was eventually incorporated into free Greece in 1830. Today's Eubea is a peaceful, visitor-friendly landscape with no ambition to become another centre of mass tourism. Maintaining the island's originality, it has excellent communication with the mainland and is a great starting point for trips to various parts of the beautiful olive country, which are enabled by numerous ferry connections and a bridge from Chalkida, the island's capital city, to the mainland.

Eretria has been the island's most important city, after Chalkida, since ancient times. Today, Eretria is one of the most famous tourist destinations on the island, with good hotels, beautiful beaches and regular ferry and land connections. There is a seaside boardwalk, taverns, bars, clubs and shops. Some fragments of the ancient town have been preserved among the modern buildings, it is also worth visiting the ruins of the amphitheatre opposite the Archaeological Museum, the bathhouse not far from the harbour, the Izyda Temple to the southeast of the city and the remains of the early Christian basilica in Agia Kyriaka, 3 km from Eretria.
