The most popular tourist region in Bulgaria GOLDEN SANDS is famous for its sandy beaches, which are considered to be the most beautiful in Europe. Thick pine forests cover the picturesque slopes and conceal in themselves numerous mineral springs. The hotels take advantage of the region's natural treasures and offer their guests relaxation and therapeutic treatments in SPA centres.
Cosy restaurants and taverns with sea-views offer excellent Bulgarian dishes and wines. The centres of seaside resorts offer great fun to all, regardless of age and preferences. GOLDEN SANDS – the legend says that once upon a time, pirates hid here a huge treasure, but nature punished them for their greediness and transformed it into a gold sand. The resort that lies approx. 30 km north of Varna offers sea and sunbathing on wonderful beaches that are soaked in a warm sea, accommodation in good-class hotels with rich sport and recreation facilities and SPA centres, as well as endless fun in numerous pubs, clubs and discos.
ST. CONSTANTINE AND ELENA - the oldest holiday resort on the Bulgarian coastline of the Black Sea (10 km south of Golden Sands), where the first balneological centre was established already in 1908. There is a one-of-a-kind, soothing microclimate here, negatively ionised; there is an abundance of mineral springs here used in balneotherapy. You can find here peace and quiet, secluded sandy beaches hidden in small bays, and immerse yourself in the beautiful old park with cypresses, lindens and fig trees. There are two large hotel complexes in the resort, many new hotels and older ones have been thoroughly renovated. You will also find the best shops, restaurants, taverns, cafes, pubs and clubs here. Czajka - the district of Golden Sands, well communicated with the centre of the resort. The advantages of this place are: a lot of greenery, cosy taverns, restaurants and much lower prices than in the centre of Golden Sands. - wonderful, sandy beaches, washed by the warm waters of the Black Sea - excellent, regional cooking: shopska salad, tarator, banica, kebapche, gyuvetch – traditional Bulgarian dishes, Rakija – often served as an aperitif and excellent red and white wines - therapeutical mineral springs used in balneotherapy in numerous sanatoriums and spa centres - St. Constantine and Helena as well as Chaika - ideal places for a family holiday. Balchik - known as the White City, it is indeed an enchanting place, whose main points include the summer residence of the Romanian Queen Maria and the surrounding Botanical Garden. Enthusiasts of beautiful beaches can easily get to the neighboring Albena.
Attractions in the region
SOFIA – ALEXANDER NEVSKY CATHEDRAL
The cathedral mosque of St Aleksander Nevsky, which houses 5 thousand people, was built in the years 1882-1913 in a neo-Byzantine style according to the project of an architect from St. Petersburg - A.N. Pomerantsev.
VARNA
On a high terrace over the coast extends a huge Seaside Park, designed by the Czech Anton Novak - the architect modeled on the gardens of the imperial palace Schönbrunn in Vienna.
RILA MONASTERY
The famous monastery was visited by Tsar Petar (927-969). In the Orthodox Church an urn has been placed with the heart of the last Tsar of Bulgaria, Boris III of Bulgaria, who converted here to orthodoxy. A museum operates here, which is rich in exhibits.
ETAR
Here you can: paint an icon, design and make beautiful jewellery, forge a horseshoe for a horse, make a pot, and after some hard work have a lokum, halva, sesame and eat many delicious... etars.
GABROVO
In the city of humour and satire, the clock on the tower works also at night. It does not pay off to wear shoes by climbing the tower in the morning to turn on the mechanism, and again in the evening to stop it...
NESSEBAR
The walls of the proud Greek Mesembria neighbours with a complex of 18th-century houses in Black Sea style, with artfully carved wooden pillars and bays. "The Bulgarian Ravenna" impresses with its view of the Orthodox church.
IN THE STRANDZHA MOUNTAINS
...Xenophon admired the Thracian dances. Thracian rituals survived in nestinars' rites - a dance on burning coal. This tradition was inscribed on UNESCO's List of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
KAZANLAK
Valiant Thracians rest with their horses in kurgans in the Valley of the Thracian Kings. There are more than 1500 of them in the fragrant with roses Kazanlak Basin (it is also worth visiting the Museum of Roses).
BACHKOVO MONASTERY
On the fresco Last Judgement in the Orthodox Church of St Nicholas, the artist Zachari Zograf placed influential Turkish citizens of Plovdiv among the damned. The passions of Muslims have gained approval from Bulgarians, but the naked women sinners aroused disgust.
PERPERIKON
The Oracle of Dionysus, just as famous as the oracle in the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, was in Perperikon! Thus, here "Alexander the Great himself heard such a prophecy, (...) that he would be the lord of the world" (Suetonius, Twelve Caesars).
