Megalonissos, in other words Great Island - that's what Greeks call Crete, the largest of the thousands of Greek islands and fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea. They call it the biggest not only in the literal sense. The most famous Greek poet - Homer - was enraptured by the beauty of Crete.

EASTERN CRETE

Heraklion - the capital of Crete is a place where tourists come from all over the world to spend an unforgettable holiday on the beautiful beaches of the island, in vibrant resorts or charming corners. In the area of Heraklion are the ruins of the famous Palace of Knossos, regarded as the mythical labyrinth. Ierapetra is the southernmost city of Europe, situated by the warm Libyan Sea, only 300 km from Africa. The old city of Ieraperta has retained its authentic atmosphere, there are picturesque alleys here and Turkish buildings and a mosque have remained here. In the city of Ierapetra there are three beaches. It was on one of them that Anthony Quinn in the famous film "Zorba the Greek" danced the famous sirtaki. By the gorgeous Mirabello Bay, Agios Nikolaos is situated - a holiday destination. In its centre is a port, the picturesque Lake Voulismeni, by which taverns, cafés and restaurants are situated. The most popular tourist destination on the island is Hersonissos. In the centre there are many shops, taverns and restaurants, as well as sports centres offering a variety of activities. Beaches are mostly sandy or sand and shingle. Many of them are located in coves. Between two vibrant resorts – Malia (approx. 3 km) and Hersonissos (approx. 5 km), Stalida is located, with a centre with a seaside boardwalk. It offers all sorts of shops, bars, taverns and cafes, as well as several discos. The long, sandy beach offers great conditions for relaxation; a rich offer of watersports is available for the active.

WESTERN CRETE

The largest and most important city in this part of the island is Chania, located by Chania Bay, on the site of ancient Kidonia, the traces of which can still be found in the city.

Many consider Chani to be the most beautiful city in Crete; its beautiful and varied architecture reminds of Venetian and Turkish occupation, dozens of small streets and corners within the old city encourage constant strolls, and the bars, cafes and taverns open until late invite you to cross their hospitable thresholds. For tourists who decide to stay in the area of Chania, there are fantastic landscapes, which compensate for the lack of any significant historical monuments; beaches in Falassarna, in Gramvousa and Elafonisi are some of the most beautiful in Crete; passage through the Samaria Gorge is a treat - the longest gorge in Europe, situated in the Lefka Ori Mountains. Approx. 16 km west of Chania and approx. 5 km from Platanias lies Maleme - a peaceful tourist destination (regular local buses provide connection). There is a centre with shops, bars and taverns and a disco here. The beaches here are much less crowded than in the more popular tourist destinations, with most of them shingle and rocky. Some of the most vibrant tourist destinations on the west coast are Platanias and Agia Marina with a very wide offer of watersports on the beaches and diving schools. The beaches are mainly sandy. Kolymbari is a small and quiet town, with a traditional Cretan character. It has a small centre with shops, cafes and taverns, and a fishing port. It is famous above all for its excellent restaurants serving, among others, superb fish and seafood. In the town it is worth visiting Gonias monastery built almost 400 years ago. Rocky and sandy-rocky beaches. Regular connections to Platanias, Agia Marina and Chania. Kissamos (Kastelli) is full of charm, surrounded by beautiful landscapes. The town has a population of approx. 3000 inhabitants and is the capital of the region of the same name. It is known for its production of wine and olive oil. Despite the dynamic development, Kissamos retains its genuine nature and you can feel an authentic Cretan atmosphere here; 2 discos are open in the season. It is easy to get to Chania using local transport, and the small port provides regular connections with many islands and the Greek mainland. The third largest and extremely charming city in Crete is Rethymno. It is mainly famous for its port, which is towered over by the Fortezza stronghold erected by the Venetians, with a mosque of Sultan Ibrahim built by Turks on the apex, which fits impressively into the panorama of the old city. Until recently it was rarely visited by tourists, but now it develops quickly thanks to the beautiful beaches and interesting surroundings. Plakias was still a small fishing settlement half a century ago, today it is a cosy tourist town with taverns and shops approx. 35 km from Rethymno. The small Damnoni Bay facing south provides many sunny days, and the surrounding hills with their tourist routes encourage walking. In close vicinity to Plakias, on the eastern side of the bay, there are several beautiful sandy beaches, the nearest is Peligremnos, the next one however is the most famous - Damnoni. In the area you can find a couple of small deserted beaches, ideal for relaxing in peaceful surroundings, among others small Ammoudi, Schinaria, and west of Plakias: Gavdolimano and the most beautiful with velvety sand and crystal water - Souda.
