Djerba is an island of subtlety: mild climate, endless beaches with delicate sand, shallow, warm sea almost completely lacking waves, low-land landscape created by the greenery of palm trees, the beige of the sandy earth and whiteness of low-rise buildings in which domes and round cubical shapes dominate. All this creates an atmosphere of a strange stillness, magical quiet and unnatural peace. It is no wonder that the largest Tunisian island, located just a few kilometres from the south-eastern coast of the country, aspires to the name of the mythical Island of Lotus Eaters.

Among those visiting the island who decide to go beyond the gardens or hotel beaches, will find interesting historical monuments. In the south of the island small Meninx ruins can be found - a settlement established in the 8th century B.C. by Phoenicians, well-prospering also in the Roman times. The wealth of Meninx's inhabitants can be seen through the levy built by them, joining the island with the mainland, making trade contacts with the African continent easier. Thanks to it you can get to Zarzis Oasis - a less frequented and quieter of the louder resorts, it is an ideal place for people looking for peace and quiet in beautiful, well-maintained palm tree gardens. The hotel base Zarzis is famous for its rich thalassotherapy facilities, using the favourable properties of the gifts of the sea such as salts, algae and clay for beautifying and relaxing purposes. In the centre of Djerba there is Hara Kebira and Hara Sghira, where to this day a small Jewish community lives and a few synagogues function. The history of the most famous of them El Ghriba, meaning "the strange", dates back to 586 BC. Although it is true that the current structure dates back to the beginning of the last century, the Torah kept in its sanctuary is one of the oldest in the world.

Turkish reign on the island began in 1560 from the capture by the Spaniards of the fortress known as Bordj el Ghazi Mustafa, located between the coast and the centre of the town Houmt Souk - the administrative capital of the island. On the north-east and east coast of Djerba are the most beautiful beaches currently belonging to the tourist zone of the island. On a more than 20 km-long strip of the coast there are tens of hotels of various standards, from club hotels to luxurious palaces, concealing wonderful thalassotherapy centres within their interiors. Accommodation on the island gives huge opportunities for playing various sports: tennis, bowling, golf, horse riding, diving, parasailing and windsurfing, as well as sand sailing. Hotel animations programmes, folklore shows, discos and the casino will provide for evening entertainment.
