Essaouira is a former Phoenician port, a fortified port city, founded by the Portuguese in the middle of the 15th century, which they called Mogador. This marvellous fortress over the Atlantic, in white and blue colours is the perfect place to buy Moroccan handicrafts, particularly valued and well-known all over the world products made from thuja, cedar and ebony wood. The beautiful fishing port, the area of the defense walls with historical cannons, the old Mellah - a Jewish district - there are must-see points during your stay in Essaouira. The calm medina is a UNESCO site, full of narrow, winding streets with whitewashed houses, shops and art galleries is the heart of the city. The most popular and most photogenic object that attracts crowds of tourists is the massive city fortifications,which are about 250 years old, stretching along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
