The wonderful past of Cyprus is connected with the cult of the goddess Aphrodite. She emerged from the sea foam right here, in the vicinity of Paphos, in the marvellous place Petra tou Romiou, which name carries another legend. Already in the antiquity, the cult of the goddess of love attracted newcomers here from all over the world, like today tourists are attracted by beautiful beaches and a clean sea.
PAPHOS - in the antiquity, there were two settlements on the territory of Paphos: Old Paphos and New Paphos. Today New Paphos is inhabited and is the the fourth largest city in Cyprus. The city has a rich history: it was under Roman rule, Turkish, Venetian and British rule. From every age wonderful relics of the past have been preserved, thanks to which the city is entered onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. The unique floor mosaics in Roman villas are famous - one of the best-preserved in the region of the Mediterranean Sea. Today, Paphos is a renowned resort with gorgeous sandy beaches, of which there are more than 20 here. Many of them are distinguished by the Blue Flag certificate. For amateurs of shopping an attractive offer in the centre of Paphos has been prepared: shops and shopping centres with the best foreign companies and local goods. An ideal combination of history, historical monuments, beautiful landscapes and a pleasant climate.
LIMASSOL – the second biggest city in Cyprus, over Akrotiri bay, between the ancient cities of Amathus and Kurion, at the foot of the Troodos mountains with wineries, from where comes the most famous Cypriot dessert wine Commandaria, apparently remembering the times of Richard the Lionheart. This king's wedding took place in Limassol. An unforgettable experience is taking part in the joyful Wine Festival in September. There is a lovely old town here, the Archeological Museum worth recommending, the largest aquapark on the island Fasouri Watermania and a port from where cruise ships depart to Israel and Egypt. Numerous hotels, taverns, pubs and discos are located in the seaside district that stretches out for approx. 10 km. Well-maintained, sandy beaches have a greyish yellow colour and gently shelving beach.
LARNAKA – the third largest city in Cyprus in terms of size, an important tourist and port centre. In the heart of Larnaka there are remains of the ancient city-kingdom Kition from the 12th century B.C. This is also the place where St. Lazarus came to experience a "second" life, after he was resurrected. On Lazarus' grave a church was erected under his invocation. The salt lake nearby is a favourite spot of rest for thousands of birds that migrate in the winter, and on its shore is located the popular place for Muslim pilgrimages Hala Sultan Tekke. Along the beach that is covered in a dark sand there is a teeming-with-life, particularly at night, palm tree seaside boardwalk with numerous taverns, cafes, restaurants and shops. Numerous watersport centres are located on the beach.
