La Isla Bonita - the beautiful island, that's how its proud locals speak of La Palma. And definitely with reason! The greatest advantage of La Palma is the unique, diverse landscapes: canyons, forests, mountains that collide with the black volcanic beaches which shimmer in the sun, the famous Caldera de Taburiente, the white houses in the dreamy towns and the ubiquitous banana trees, create scenery of exceptional beauty, that captivate with its naturalness.
The fifth largest island of the Canarian archipelago, located 60 km from Tenerife and 400 km from Morocco, it is a great place for amateurs of trekking, outdoor sports and bike riding. Lush endemic nature and a lot of opportunities for active recreation, make La Palma the perfect choice for full relaxation and recharging. Intense green landscape has also caused La Palma to be called La Isla Verde, namely: the Green Island. There are no large holiday resorts and shopping centres here, but in the local shops you can buy traditional Canarian articles: laces, embroidery, ceramics decorated in geometric patterns. In Mazo even Canarian cigars are made. Evenings are spent with food and music in tapas bars, but the nightlife is not as intense here as on other, more commercialised islands. On La Palma it is worth trying simple meals served in local cafes such as: seafood, churros de pescado - fish in batter, sancocho de pescado - fish cooked with vegetables, caldereta - a type of soup, queso blanco - smoked goat's cheese, sopa de garbanzos - chickpea soup or the typical Canarian papas arrugadas - small jacket potatoes with Canarian sauses like mojo rojo. The middle of the island is taken up by Caldera de Taburiente National Park, one of the largest attractions in La Palma. There are different hypotheses on its origin, but the term kaldera was adopted and means a recess at the peak of the volcano, with a depth of 1.5 km and a diameter of approx. 10 km, which is surrounded by rock walls up to 2426 m high. The Park is covered by Canarian pine forests, many interesting tourist routes have been created here. Of interest for enthusiasts of nature is Los Tilos - a bay laurel forest protected by UNESCO.
In the north of the island an amazing attraction are the La Fajana pools in Barlovento and Charco Azul in San Andres built into the ocean cliffs. Black volcanic beaches mainly focus around Puerto Naos, Puerto Tazacorte and Los Cancajos. They are never crowded and it's easy here to find the perfect place for sunbathing. In the summer the ocean is calm and warm. The average annual temperature in La Palma is 20 degrees. In the eastern part of the island, from Mazo to Barlovento, the climate is milder, while in the western part from Fuencaliente to Garafia it is warmer and dryer. La Palma is known for its exceptional transparency of air and clear skies. That is why it is one of the most modern astrophysics observatories in the world: Roque de Los Muchachos (2426 m above sea level) with the world's largest optical telescope GranTeCan. The most popular tourist destinations on the island are Santa Cruz de La Palma - vibrant and full of landmarks, charming capital of La Palma on the east coast and Los Cancajos: beautifully situated between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, with the black beach Playa de Los Cancajos, distinguished by the Blue Flag. In the west of the island there is Puerto Naos with a nice black sand and shingle beach surrounded by palm trees, there is also a promenade, a few restaurants and bars and typical souvenir shops.
